THE PROA The
aims of my Proa Project, financed by the « Club Recherche et Loisirs,
Paris 10éme,» contain three aspects : To
understand the workings of the Crab
Claw rig – to master it to it’s full value. Compare
the Crab Claw with the sails Jungada, Elliptic, Bermudan, Gaff and Huari (?),
with the same area, on a life scale boat, and in true sailing conditions.
Compare the efficiency and the performance of the differents floats, foils
and Ngalawa skis. To achieve this project, I built a tacking proa (6,45m
long), capable of sailing with different sails and rigs, as well as different
floats and their substitutes.
The « hydrodynamics » trials could take place
simultaneously, for example : fixing a ski on the opposite side of the
float. Starboard – Proa, Port tack – Ngalawa. Such a boat, equipped with the Jungada sail, would be the
synthesis of ancient sea faring cultures from three continents. And with
me on the deck – even four…
